Things to do When Moving to Texas

You have to consider things like the heat, how to make your move easier, and how to efficiently pack to cut down on your effort and time. Here are a few tips:

Check the weather

As most of you know, Texas gets HOT. So, before you choose to move at 2pm in the afternoon, make sure you check your weather app. It is probably best to start moving yourself very early in the morning (as early as possible) and after the sun starts to set. You will thank me later for this tip! If you are new to the area…get ready for the heat!

A job that may seem manageable for your family can become a lot more difficult in the Texas sun. It may be worth considering some professional help to lighten the load. Luckily, whether you’re looking for a hand with residential moving in Plano Texas, or Dallas, there are lots of professionals available across the state to lend a hand.

Texas is hot and getting hotter. Depending on where you settle after moving to Texas you may face a dry heat or sticky humidity, but get ready for high temperatures either way.

Creating a moving checklist and budget

First, draft a moving checklist that includes a timeline. Everyone’s timeline will look different depending on how much notice is given before the move. Some people will have two months and others might have two weeks. Next, include a realistic moving budget. By visually organizing your move, you can keep a handle on events as they unfold. Not sure where to start? Go room to room. What all do you need to move, what do you need to pack, what is on your to-do list? Write it all down and then organize it.

Weigh the pros and cons of hiring professional movers

If you don’t have access to willing family and friends, if you don’t have the man power yourself (or time), or if you are moving to Texas or any another state, it might make sense to hire professional movers. The amount of work they take off your plate during this stressful time might be well worth the added cost. Hiring professional movers can be a great experience: if you hire the right company. Don’t be afraid to ask questions before signing a contract. This due diligence will give you peace of mind as moving day approaches.

Moving Guide

Declutter so that you can pack (and unpack) less

A crucial packing tip is making sure you don’t move anything that you no longer need. Lighten your stress and workload by decluttering before you enter the packing stage, which means figuring out what to toss, keep, sell, or donate. Take measurements of your new home and get rid of any furniture that won’t fit or you know you won’t use.

Give each room a different color packing label or tape

To stay organized, print off multi-colored packing labels or use different colored packing tape and give each room its own color. Label the contents of each box and include the room it belongs in. Then in your new place, use colored tape to mark entrances to rooms. This moving tip will save movers a ton of time. Instead of needing to read the label explicitly or play the room guessing game, they can just match color to color.

Use the correct sized boxes – and fill them properly!

Place heavy items like books, in small boxes, and lighter items in larger boxes. This makes it easy for movers to organize and pack boxes into the moving truck. Be sure to pack heavier items on the bottom and lighter items on the top to avoid damaging breakables. Fill in any gaps with packing paper, clothing or foam peanuts to prevent items from shifting around during the move. Use tape to close the bottom and top seams and around the edges where stress is concentrated.

Eat out on moving day

We are glad you are moving to Texas! We have so much to share. There are so many great local TX-based restaurants that need your support right now, so eat out on moving day to save yourself time, effort, and clean up. Also, if you have already packed up your kitchen and do not want to get it dirty in the days before your move, use those great local restaurants then, as well!
