The Toyota Supra rolled out in the early 1990s as a head-turning sports car with plenty of power in its day. The Supra 1995 was an impressive real-wheel-drive car, and now the Supra 2022 uses the same method for handling the road.

The cars look pretty similar, yet the Supra 2022 is more powerful and faster than its predecessor. Let’s compare what has changed over the years.
Engines – Toyota Supra vs. Toyota Supra 1995
Looking under the hoods of these cars, you will find the Supra 1995 has a sequentially-turbocharged 3-liter inline-six engine with a 24-valve cylinder head. It was rated at 320 horsepower with 315 lb-ft of torque. This car was no joke.
The 2022 Supra boasts of a 382 horsepower engine with 368 lb-ft of torque. This updated version has reduced engine compression ratio from 11:1 down to 10.2:1 to give it a boost of power. Another thing you might notice, if you are into car engines and can spot a logo, is that the Supra z4 is comprised of BMW Z4 components. This is not a rip-off. It is a partnership between Toyota and BMW that is not a secret.
Built for Speed
The Supra 1995 could hit 60 mph in about 5 seconds and could run a quarter mile in 13.8 seconds at 106 mph. Toyota redesigned the engine in the 2022 Supra to pump out higher torque figures at higher engine speeds. This car can reach 60 mph in less than 4 seconds. In the Supra z4, some of this is thanks to the German BMW engineering.
Handling
The original Supra handled the road silky smooth, yet the gear shifting is a little clunky in contrast to the 2022 Supra. The Supra 1995 steering is hydraulically assisted and a bit slower than the 2022’s sharper and more responsive electric unit.
Toyota fitted the new 2022 Supra with aluminum braces to improve lateral rigidity, dampers, and front and rear bump stops. Toyota also reworked the programming of the electric power steering, the vehicle stability control, and the active differential.
The result is a car that better handles curves and corners. Though, the 1995 still handles impressively.
Final Thoughts
As I was last year, I am still impressed with the Toyota Supra and like the BMW improvements to the Supra z4. The 2022 Toyota Supra has been reimagined to offer more power, speed, and improved handling.
Yet, the vintage Supra 1995 remains a force to be reckoned with and is a favorite among collectors.
