This year’s Summer Reading theme is Reading Under the Stars. Also, EVEREADY® battery is powering, the maker of batteries and flashlights, to encourage families to discover new and fun ways to explore reading outside this summer.
In June I shared about the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge, the 8 year running program that is dedicated to stopping the “Summer Slide” and getting kids to read throughout the summer months when school is out.
Last year, Scholastic inspired more than 130,000 kids from 4,200 schools in 31+ countries to set a new world record for summer reading. They read a whopping 176 million+ minutes!
This Summer we have had plenty of chances to enjoy a few books, and spent a couple nights under the stars reading. The girls have loved finding times and places to read, whether it is inside the house in a secrete hiding spot or outside on a blanket, with a flashlight reading a good chapter book. We normally push the girls to read throughout the summer school break, but this year was different. After filling out the Summer Reading pledge cards, using the reading log, and using all the resorces online with Scholastic. The girls had their own drive and motivation to read, and to break the world record of minutes read.
Some of the books they have read this Summer are:
A Pet For Fly Guy – Tedd Arnold
Spacemice Alien Escape – Geronimo Stilton
Cleopatra in Space – Mike Maihack
The Great Greene Heist – Varian Johnson
