How to Help Overcome Illiteracy Through the Literacy Project

My girls spend a lot of time on school work during the winter. Sometimes we all just need a break. Winter weather in North Texas is not particularly eventful, so we like to get outside whenever we can. One of our favorite things to do is to go hiking.

This winter, I have teamed up with Fruit Shoot® in support of their partnership with Pizza Hut®’s First Book Literacy Project.

There are lots of trails around the Dallas area that are appropriate for all ages and skill levels. Several allow dogs on leashes. We have a new puppy with lots of energy to expend, so we’ll take him along sometimes.

I’ll put a bottle of the girls’ favorite Fruit Shoot® juices in their backpacks to keep everyone hydrated. They enjoy the apple, strawberry, and raspberry, and wild berry grapefruit flavors. There is no added sugar, just real fruit juice concentrate. I don’t need anyone wired from a high fructose sugar surge.

It does tend to get a little chilly late in the day. So, after a nice long hike, we like to warm up around the fire pit with some good books, or I will read them a story. We sometimes roast some marshmallows, and I’ll have more Fruit Shoot® juices, bottles of water, and a thermos of hot chocolate on hand. These are special winter adventure days with my girls.

It is so important for kids, and adults, to move, especially when things slow down in winter. I am not a fan of letting my children spend all of their free time on social media or playing video games. I like to encourage them to get outside as much as possible. As a dad, I feel passionate about spending as much quality time with my kids as possible. Hiking and walking are great activities because they are free and there is so much to explore.

This winter, I have teamed up with Fruit Shoot® in support of their partnership with Pizza Hut®’s First Book Literacy Project. Every time a Fruit Shoot® drink is purchased at Pizza Hut® between November 10, 2016 and April 30, 2017, five cents will be donated to The Literacy Project.

Take some time this winter to have some adventures with your family. Put the phones and computers away for a bit and do something fun and energetic. Then take the kids to Pizza Hut® and make a donation to the First Book Literacy Project by purchasing a Fruit Shoot® beverage with your pizza. You will be helping a child learn to read.

We try and put the electronics away as much as possible. There is nothing like experiencing the world rather than just viewing it

We order Pizza Hut all the time… no one can beat the personal pan pizza! I’ll have to order some of these drinks next time we get that for dinner. It’s a big treat to my kids to get drinks like this. (and I like that there’s fruit juice not sugar)

Our girls have continued to homeschool through school closures, just as we’ve done for over a decade.

Online classes for many though have been an adjustment, and they can really slow down a home network with multiple devices.

Luckily #Verizon offers fast, reliable 5G internet in the #Dallas area!
