Over the last few years, the Premier League has seen an influx of goals. The 2023-24 season comfortably brought the highest rate of goalscoring in Premier League history, with 730 goals scored before the March international break.
Not only does this make a bet on Premier League as unpredictable as ever, but it underscores the need for a side to have a reliable goalkeeper.
The modern era of keepers has seen a new way of teams playing out from the back. While David Raya was initially signed by Arsenal as an understudy for Aaron Ramsdale, the Spaniard established himself as number one between the sticks at the Emirates and finished the season winning the Golden Glove for the most clean sheets.
Indeed, the Premier League has some of the finest shot-stoppers in Europe, and Raya will face plenty of competition this season for the Golden Glove. Arsenal look to continue their watertight backline as they pursue the title ahead of Manchester City.
With that in mind, here we look at some of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League and assess their chances of winning this season’s Golden Glove award.
Ederson – Manchester City
While rumours circulate that Ederson could potentially leave Manchester City this summer, at the time of writing, he is still a crucial component in Pep Guardiola’s side, as the Brazilian searches for an eighth Premier League title since signing from Benfica in 2017.
Ederson’s injury troubles last season ruled him out of big games in the title race, however, the 30-year-old kept 10 clean sheets as City saw off Arsenal and Liverpool to win the league.
His ability to break lines with his short passing as well as go long from goal kicks added a new dimension to a City side that has dominated English football for almost a decade, and if this is to be Ederson’s last summer he will bow out as one of the pioneers of modern goalkeeping.
Alisson Becker – Liverpool
Perhaps the best goalkeeper in the world for a number of years now, Alisson Becker has regularly saved the day for Liverpool and has already won the Golden Glove twice in 2019 and 2022.
The Brazilian will be hoping he can impress in Arne Slot’s maiden year in charge of the Reds, having missed 10 games last season with injury.
Alisson is already a Liverpool legend, providing fans with so many memorable moments, and as he enters his seventh year at Anfield, he will be hoping to compete for the Premier League title once more, coming close to a second title on a number of occasions since the 2019/2020 victory.
Emiliano Martínez – Aston Villa
Emiliano Martínez has burst onto the scene in recent years and was key in securing Aston Villa a place in this season’s Champions League, as Unai Emery’s side finished fourth to the surprise of many.
Martínez was an outcast at Arsenal before an injury to Bernd Leno in 2020 put him in the shop window, where Villa swooped in and allowed the Argentina number one to flourish.
Since then, the 30-year-old has won two Copa America titles for his country and the 2022 World Cup. Domestically, he made 34 appearances for the west Midlands outfit last term, keeping nine clean sheets.
Alphonse Areola – West Ham United
An outside shout for the Golden Glove, only Andre Onana and Luton Town’s Thomas Kaminski made more saves than West Ham United goalkeeper Alphonse Areola last season.
The Frenchman has become a cult hero in east London, playing a part in their European success and keeping the Irons aloft during their difficult periods under David Moyes.
Julen Lopetegui has taken over at the Olympic Stadium following the Scots’ departure and will rely on Areola to keep things tight in the early weeks of his tenure.
