# Bringing Thought to Life - Pixar Inside Out

**Have you wondered how animation comes to life?** I have. I have been fascinated about animation and how the whole start to finish process. While at the #InsideOutEvent our group of 25 bloggers had a chance to get the inside scoop on Pixar Inside Out. We sat with Supervising Animators Shawn Krause & Victor Navone and hear about the inspiration and direction of how Riley’s Emotions were animated.

With a small group of 45 animators at most, InsideOut was mold into life, with the direction of Director Pete Docter. We watched a clip of the "animation dailies", were the group of animators would present there work from the previous day or days. It was pretty interesting to hear how each shot goes through multiple changes, only to be presented each morning, until a "final it" from the director. You can see above, Story Artist Tony Fucile joins in the "dailies" to do “draw overs” that he would help the animators address notes from Pete.

> Pete often shows impressions for characters on his face, so animators often watch his face for direction in their shot; good to have a mirror nearby as an animator so you can see the emotion and translate it

Overall, it was entertaining hearing Shawn & Victor give their take on how Pete would watch clip after clip of one scene, to only go a different direction or love it and keep it. The collective team work among animators and writers come together when everybody gets to see the movie evolve in front of them. After a year and half of creating short clips and revisions, Pixar InsideOut, animation portion was completed.

Now have you thought about doing the same thing but on a smaller scale? I can only image how much work goes into each shot or scene. The last time I animated anything was on a flipbook, and it was just a stick man running down a road. I would have to take that and have a million dailies to get to the caliber of #InsideOut.
