Disclosure: Thanks to Scholastic for encouraging my family this Summer with some Adventure reading. Even though this is a sponsored post, all opinions are mine.

The Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge wants you to “Power Up & Read” … and we have the perfect reading buddy to energize your kid’s summer reading!

Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge

Scholastic’s Summer Reading Challenge is a free online and mobile reading program designed to encourage kids to keep reading during the long summer break. Its purpose is to prevent what is called “Summer Slide”, which is simply a regression of children’s reading skills that teachers have noted for years at the beginning of the school year. This year the program is sponsored by Energizer®, an American manufacturer of batteries, and the theme is “Power Up and Read.” Energizer® is sending its iconic Energizer Bunny® to help kids stay energetic and go to the max with their summer reading.

Kids can go to the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge website to log all the minutes they spend reading during the summer to set a new world record. As they reach weekly milestones kids unlock new and original short stories written by 13 Scholastic authors. Each author begins with the story starter…”I glanced over my shoulder to make sure that no one followed me into the library, then took a deep breath and opened the glowing book…”

This year, the elementary school with the most minutes read and logged will receive a visit from Michael Northup, the author of Scholastic’s new multi-platform series, TombQuest. The top middle school will win a visit from Varian Johnson, author of My Life as a Rhombus and A Red Polka Dot in a World Full of Plaid. The top 20 schools with the most reading minutes logged will be listed in the 2016 Scholastic Book of World Records. Those top 20 schools and the top school in each state will receive a special plaque to be displayed at the school.

The Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge is an excellent remedy for the regression of reading skills. Practice makes perfect when it comes to reading, and summer reading can help retain decoding, vocabulary and comprehension skills. These skills become more and more important as students progress through each grade. Upper elementary aged students and older must tackle harder reading material throughout the curriculum and become independent readers.

Don’t let summer slide happen in your household. Keep reading this summer with the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge and stay energized with the Energizer® Bunny.
